The End of an Era

Harvesting the final pieces of Pluto in Capricorn with the Full Moon

On July 21, at 10:16 UT, we have our second Capricorn Full moon in a row! (At 29° 08’)

This Full Moon takes place at the final (AKA anaretic or critical) degree of Capricorn. The anaretic degree of a sign has a “last hurrah” feel to it; the planet moving through it feels extra intense, condensing the energy of the sign into an urgent final statement or lesson before moving on into the next sign.

With last month’s Cap Full Moon at 0 degrees, we can think about the Universe highlighting an important process, which is being book-ended by two Full Moons in the same sign. We’re getting an extension on a due date, or an encore, or a double dose of a specific nutrient that’s extra needed right now.

Now, to be fair, the Moon moves through the whole zodiac in just about four weeks, so if we considered the Moon alone we might miss the message in the air. But in traditional astrology, Luna, being the closest celestial body to Earth, was considered to be the translator for all other planets. Imagine the Moon like a satellite dish (pun not intended! 😆), beaming the messages from the rest of the Solar System down, the better for us to grasp and process.

This Full Moon is closely conjunct Pluto, now retrograding one final time towards Capricorn, where it’ll only go as far as that charged anaretic degree, to complete the arc of the story of transformation it initiated in the sign of traditional values and hierarchies, all the way back in 2008. That was when Pluto first entered Capricorn, and it won’t return for another 248 years.

The Moon right now is whispering to us of the irrevocable process of change we’ve been on since then: inviting us to harvest important insights from our Plutonian journey. This aids us in steering the energy consciously, rather than being blindsided by its intensity, as the cycle begins anew in the next sign — Aquarius.

After a brief teaser-trailer of our next collective passage, with Pluto dipping its toes into Aquarius for a few months this year and last, the curtain is rising on the final act of a tale of dramatic transformation ushered in sixteen years ago.

We’re talking about the bigger, transpersonal story of revelation of the Shadow of societal systems of top-down authority.

Think of all the systems and routines that demand we cut off from our feelings, our needs and our soft bodies; all the mechanization, exploitation, colonization and power-over we’ve long considered the norm, both personally and collectively.

And

All the ways we’ve raised awareness, learned how invisible and normalized these structures have been, and how we’re working to dismantle them. How we’re striving to shift the values that govern our lives, so that the rules we follow are based on compassion and the flourishing of humans and the more-than-human family alike.

This push to transform old systems of top-down control plays out in our world stage as much as in our inner world. As with all momentous, long-term planetary transits, some of us rise up to the occasion and some of us double down on unhealthy patterns.

There but for the Grace of God go I.

Ultimately, we must recognize that, however well or poorly we do outwardly with Pluto’s transits, we’re on a very long trajectory of collective trauma healing. Capricorn’s empowering side is all about creating something meaningful and tangible, an accomplishment we can be proud of, that reflects the beacon of our heart. During this Full Moon, it’s a good time to take stock about where we’re doing that important work no matter how slowly. No matter how invisibly, in the face of madness and crisis in the collective. It still matters.

Capricorn, after all, is ruled by Saturn, Lord of Time. Saturn reminds us of the very long game.  And invites us to notice, too, any specific ways in which we’ve not yet heeded the call to align our actions with our long term dreams and contributions to the world. Wherever you are, take the next step.

During this Full Moon, we may notice particular situations, themes, relationships and projects that are about to come to completion, or to transition into a whole new incarnation. As Pluto moves out of the anaretic degree of Capricorn, into Aquarius for good this November, we can be sure that the landscape we call “normal” is going to shift radically, perhaps beyond our wildest imaginings in the coming years. But we’re only at the start of what’s coming, so it’ll be wise to prepare for all eventualities to the best of our abilities.

(Again, with Pluto, we’re looking at transmuting the shadow — for example with AI technology hanging in the balance: will we use it in ethical, life-affirming ways, or for profit and exploitation?)

Mark any synchronicities and special occurrences around this time, to track them as they unfold between now and November. Evaluate what arenas they shine a light on in your life. Some final piece of the puzzle might be ready to click into place.

Here are some prompts to help you take stock and make room for incoming change.

What Capricorn themes are ready to be released — what’s just over and done?

  • Issues with our relationship to authority, and how we give our power away to authority figures — or anyone we consciously or unconsciously believe is “above us”;
  • Doing what’s expected because it “what’s done”, not because we believe in it — or its cousin, “doing the right thing for the wrong reasons”;
  • Repression and suppression of our emotional experience;
  • Glorification of grind and hustle culture, but without rewards that leave us feeling fulfilled at a Soul level;
  • Chronic (self) deprivation, or an addiction to trying to squeeze milk from a rock (i.e. putting ourselves in positions where we won’t be met no matter how hard we try);
  • Any places where we’re over-controlling with ourselves or with others out of fear (of looking foolish, of having needs go unmet, of the unknown, of being vulnerable).

Yet Capricon also brings the medicine of “doing hard thing” ( soul-aligned, heart-connected hard things, I should add). What are some Capricornian takeaways that you can bring with you into the next era?

Have you…?

  • Developed inner resources that allowed you to navigate hardship or difficult odds?
  • Made small or big improvements in grit and consistency, in service of something you care about?
  • Upleveled your self-respect and boundaries?
  • Matured emotionally and spiritually; become someone others can come to for support and guidance?
  • Committed to meaningful projects or challenges?
  • Stepped up in leadership in service of something purposeful?
  • Done the hard work of (trauma) healing, generational cycle-breaking, shifting deep-seated lineage patterns?

As always, how this lunation impacts you will depend on your natal chart. If you have planets or angles between ~ 27oof Capricorn, Cancer, Aries or Libra, and 2o of Aquarius, Leo, Taurus or Scorpio, you’ll feel this Full Moon more personally. But for each of us, the Full Moon will take place in a specific house of your chart, which determines where in your life you’ll see the fingerprints of this lunation. Look for where 29o Capricorn falls on your chart (you can cast a chart for free on sites like astro.com or astro-seek.com) and the house will give you some more information to refine the above questions.

Some rough examples: if the Full Moon is in your 1st house, look at releasing shadow expressions of Capricorn in your relationship to yourself, your body and your identity. Track how you’ve leveled up in your ability to be decisive, embody maturity and wisdom. If the Moon falls in your 6th house, it’s time to let go of deadening routines and responsibilities that squeeze the life out of you, and celebrate any gains in consistency or craft, around goals that truly matter to you.

A quick online search will give you lots to work with in terms of the house of this lunation on your chart.
